Project Overview

Windy Harbour was a multi-phase project which spanned over 13 months. P&H Pipelines undertook several phases of work over the year. These included Work-Pack One, Work-Pack Four, Work-Pack Ten and Work-Pack Eleven.

Work-Pack One was split into three phases and mainly took place at Skippool Roundabout in Poulton-le-Fylde. The initial Phase Two of Work-Pack One began in mid-July 2021. After the team had been inducted and the site was mobilised, we began installing a new 600MM ductile-iron pipe. After 10 weeks, this phase was completed. The pipe was tested and chlorinated before the job was signed off. Phase Three of Work-Pack One then began in April 2022 and the team continued to install the remaining section of the 600MM pipe. This stage was completed in June 2022. Phase One of Work-Pack One ran alongside Phase Three and Work-Pack One was finished in April 2022.

Further Details

Whilst Work-Pack One was being completed, the other phases of the job were being completed alongside, and this included Work-Pack Four (2021), Ten (2022), and Eleven (which ran from March 2022 to July 2022). Work-Pack 10 consisted of welding the pipe together.

This came with multiple complications as the team encountered many issues with the equipment, such as the welding unit. Despite the difficulties and setbacks, the team completed the job on time and to an exceptional standard.

The reason for the works was National Highways were looking to improve the reliability and safety of a section of the A585 between Windy Harbour Junction and Skippool. The scheme extends over 4.8km of highway, and encompasses junction improvements, dualling of some parts of the existing road, three new bridges, and a new bypass that will remove through traffic from Little Singleton’s residential roads.

This gave us the opportunity to assist with upgrading the infrastructure underneath the ground, as this new junction and road layout was being constructed.
